Traditional Water Vessel

Tamrada Lota (ತಾಮ್ರದ ಲೋಟ)

The Tamrada Lota (ತಾಮ್ರದ ಲೋಟ), or sometimes referred to as a Tamrada Gadige (ತಾಮ್ರದ ಗಡಿಗೆ) when in this pot-like form, is a quintessential water vessel that has been a staple of Indian households for centuries. Traditionally handcrafted from copper or brass, its design features a wide, rounded belly for stability and a narrower neck to prevent spillage while pouring. The presence of the distinct green and dark patina (ತುಕ್ಕು/ಪಾಟಿನ) on the surface is a natural sign of oxidation, telling a story of the vessel’s age and its long-standing relationship with water and air. These slight irregularities in shape and finish are the hallmarks of artisanal metalwork, distinguishing it from mass-produced modern alternatives.

Beyond its simple utility for carrying and storing water, the Lota (ಲೋಟ) holds deep ritualistic and medicinal significance in Kannada culture. Copper vessels were traditionally favored because of their natural antimicrobial properties, which were believed to purify drinking water and keep it cool. In a religious context, these vessels are indispensable for Pooja and Abhisheka, used to offer holy water to deities or for ritual cleansing. Today, while it remains a functional item in many rural homes, it is also highly valued as a vintage decorative piece, bringing a sense of grounded, ancient tradition and rustic elegance to contemporary living spaces.
