Services

Circulation Services

The primary point of contact for users. It manages the lending, returning, and renewal of books. In academic libraries, this often includes managing “Reserve Collections” (high-demand textbooks kept for short-term use) and maintaining user accounts through automated systems.

Online Catalogue (OPAC)

The Digital Gateway to the library’s physical holdings. It allows students and faculty to search for books, journals, and media by title, author, or keyword from any location, providing real-time information on whether a resource is currently on the shelf or checked out.

Reference Service

A professional assistance service where librarians help users navigate complex databases, locate specific information, or conduct literature searches. It ranges from answering simple directional questions to providing deep bibliographic instruction.

Institutional Membership

The library establishes formal ties with other prestigious bodies (Bangalore University Library, IIMB, British Council and DELNET). This grants students and faculty access to external collections, e-resources, and specialised facilities that the home library may not possess.

Current Awareness Service (CAS)

A proactive service designed to keep faculty and researchers updated on the latest developments in their fields. This is often done via email alerts, “Table of Contents” (TOC) notifications of new journal issues, or curated lists of recent publications.

Interlibrary Loan (ILL)

A collaborative resource-sharing service. If a researcher needs a specific book or article not available in the local collection, the library borrows it from another university or institution, ensuring that geographical boundaries do not limit academic inquiry.

Newspaper Clippings

The library maintains an organised archive of news articles related to the institution, higher education, and specific subject areas. This serves as a vital primary source for social science research and historical documentation.

Question Bank

A repository of previous years’ examination papers. This is one of the most visited sections by students, helping them understand exam patterns and prepare effectively for assessments.

SC/ST Book Bank

A specialised social equity initiative. It provides a dedicated collection of essential textbooks that students from scheduled castes and scheduled tribes can borrow for the entire semester, rather than the standard 14-day period.

Services

These are activities that extend the library’s reach beyond its standard lending functions. They include book fairs, guest lectures, “Meet the Author” sessions, and community outreach programs. In an academic context, extension services aim to integrate the library into the institution’s social and cultural life, ensuring it serves as a vibrant hub for lifelong learning.

Library Orientation / Information Literacy

This is a critical instructional service designed to empower users.

  • Orientation: Introduces new students and faculty to the library’s physical layout, rules, and digital resources.
  • Information Literacy: Goes deeper by teaching users how to identify, locate, evaluate, and use information effectively. This includes training in advanced database searching, identifying credible peer-reviewed sources, and understanding the ethics of information use (including avoiding plagiarism).

New Arrivals Display

This is a curated physical or digital showcase of the most recent acquisitions added to the library’s collection. By highlighting new books, journals, or reports, the library encourages “serendipitous discovery”—helping students and faculty stay current with the latest literature in their fields without having to search the entire catalogue.

Bulletin Board

These serve as the “creative pulse” of the library.

  • Bulletin Boards: Provide a space for official academic notices, career opportunities, news snippets, and event flyers.
